AmsterdamBiking trough the centre of Amsterdam is of course for tourists an activity you can’t miss. The bike rental sells maps with several bike tours through the city. To see the canal area with its beautiful restored houses is highly recommended. For those who love architecture we can advise you to make a tour along the “School of Amsterdam” buildings and bridges. On the East Islands you can find a beautiful mix of restored old ware houses combined with modern architecture. And of course you can bike along all famous museums of Amsterdam and the surrounding. Below we only focus on the less known attractions. On different websites of the city of Amsterdam you can find all the well known items.
Flower Auction AalsmeerAfter 12 kilometres you arrive in Aalsmeer, where the biggest flower auction of the world is situated. On a daily basis 19 million and 2 million plants are sold at this auction. If you want to see it on the busiest moment of the day, you have to be there around 9:00 a.m., especially on Mondays it is in full swing. The visitor centre of the Flower Auction is open from 7:00 – 11:00 a.m. from Monday till Friday. Go to their website for more details www.vba.nl
Ajax Museum Amsterdam South-EastThe Ajax Arena is situated only 12 kilometres from our bike rental. There are guided tours trough the stadium of Ajax. On Wednesday afternoon there are specialised tours for children. The World of Ajax Kid’s Tour starts on Wednesday at 13:30 and during the weekend at 11:00. Cobra Museum AmstelveenJust a quarter biking from our bike rental you will find the Cobra Museum. You find here mainly modern art from the Cobra Movement; Appel, Constant, Corneille and Lucebert are constantly exhibited. Beside these famous Dutch paintings and statues there is a varying exhibition. The museum is open form 11:00-17:00. www.cobra-museum.nl
Summer flower pick garden Nes aan de Amstel
A very nice bike tour (see under bike tours “Amstel tour”) brings you to this very nice initiative, a huge garden and glass house where you are allowed to pick flowers your selves. There are many special activities for the children. You can find this place at a distance of 11 kilometres from the bike rental. It is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 till 17:00.
Steam pumping station “De Cruquius” Cruquius
A unique monument just 24 kilometres of the bike rental. This is one of the most beautiful industrial monuments of the Netherlands. The steam pumping station has it’s origin in 1849 and was used to keep the water levelled in the Haarlemmermeer polder. A nice and educational stop during your bike tour.
Muider Castle Muiden
21 kilometres from Amsterdam you can find the Muider Castle. The castle is from 1280 and still in a perfect condition. Navigate to the section bicycle tours to find a beautiful bike tour which brings you to Muiden where the castle is situated. The castle is open for the public daily from 10:00 – 17:00. During the weekend it is open from 13:00 – 17:00.
Pampus
From Tuesday till Sunday, three times a day you can take a boat to Pampus; first boat leaves Muiden 10:30, last trip back starts 16:30 from Pampus. Pampus is a fortress island constructed in 1887. It was build to protect the harbour from Amsterdam and is part of the complete “Stelling of Amsterdam”.
Play farm Elsenhove Amstelveen
Play farm Elsenhove is situated in a small recreation area close to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. It is a 6,5 kilometre ride from the bike rental. Entering the grounds you will find wooden shoes for the children. The children can pet the animals. At four o clock the animals get their meal, the children are invited to help to give the animals their food. Elsenhove is open from Tuesday till Saturday from 10:00 – 17:00 and on Sunday from 14:00 – 17:00. You can find this place at Bankrasweg 1, Amstelveen; phone +31 (0)20-5457166
Kuiperij museum in the Mill of Sloten Amsterdam-Sloten
The mill is reconstructed according a mill of 1847. The mill is completely operating. You can visit the mill daily from 10:00 – 16:00. The miller explains the history and functionality of the mill during a tour through the mill.
